Cedric Watts & Francis Greene

It is sad to record the death of Emeritus Professor Cedric Watts, University of Sussex (above), aged 85, after a long illness. Cedric Watts was a regular speaker at Berkhamsted festivals, contributing no fewer than seven times between 1999 and 2016. Those who remember listening to him will recall that he invariably delivered in a quirky, humorous style underpinned with an acute intelligence and perception about his subject. His written work includes the classic A Preface to Greene – a must-read for those who want to  grow their understanding of this author. A full obituary of Cedric Watts is included in the current edition of A Sort of Newsletter.

The death of Francis Greene, Graham’s son, was mentioned in a post in May  last year. The circumstances surrounding his death have recently been announced  in DevonLife, The Daily Mail and The Times. The details are both sad and distressing to read.

May both men rest in peace.
