On 11 October 2026, the Electric Palace cinema in Hastings will be screening two television programmes, made-for-TV gems by two master storytellers, Graham Greene and John le Carré. Both feature in the Electric Palace’s TV festival, its annual celebration of the small screen. This year, the third such festival, the Electric Palace has teamed up with Hastings TV Museum to mark in fine style the centenary John Logie Baird’s first public demonstration of a working television system in the UK.
First, from the 1970s ITV/Thames Television series Shades of Greene, comes ‘Under the Garden’, an adaptation of a Greene short story never released on DVD or Blu-ray.
Wilditch (Denholm Elliott), a restless world traveller, returns to his childhood home diagnosed with terminal cancer. There, memories return of an experience that happened when he was just a boy, recollections of a magical, haunting event which took place under the garden. Whether he had made it up, dreamed it, or it really happened, the event was significant in sending him on a lifetime quest. Alongside Ellliott, the cast includes Arthur Lowe and Vivian Pickles. The episode was first aired on 10 February 1976.
Also from the 1970s comes ‘The End of the Line’, an episode of ITV’s Armchair Theatre series written by John le Carré which seemed for years to have been lost without trace but is here happily resurrected.
Shot almost entirely as a single-set duologue inside an Edinburgh-to-London night train, it stars Ian Holm as an interrogator and Robert Harris as a suspected traitor. The episode was first aired on 29 June 1970.
