The Writer in China

Graham Greene visited the Soviet Union on several occasions, particularly in the last decade of his life in order to see his old friend Kim Philby. On the other hand he made only one trip to China – in 1957. Subsequently, he wrote about that experience – but nearly thirty years later. The article called ‘A Weed Among the Flowers’ was first published in The Times newspaper in 1985 and re-published twice in 1990. Read about this visit, during which Greene in his own words behaved ‘abominably’, and about the luxury publication of the work produced later, by clicking on the Resources & Archives page and then using the Current Research tab.
