Two new books of interest to Graham Greene enthusiasts have recently been published. Firstly, Between Form and Faith: Graham Greene and the Catholic Novel by Martyn Sampson has been published by Fordham University Press. Sampson challenges critical orthodoxies in this book which covers both Greene’s “Catholic” and ” Post-Catholic” novels as well as providing fresh insights into some of his non-fiction. Martyn is a well-known face at Berkhamsted and has been Festival Director on two occasions. Copies of this book will be available on the Festival bookstall.
Festival-goers with very long memories might remember the name Rick Gekoski who gave an entertaining talk back in 2001 about meeting Graham Greene and valuing some of his collection in his erstwhile occupation as a dealer in rare books. Gekoski’s memoirs Guarded by Dragons: Encounters with Rare Books and Rare People has been published by Little Brown and includes his recollections of Greene on that occasion.
